Sri Krishnavatara as narrated in Sri Vishnu Purana

Ugrasena and Devaka were brothers…. Dr. M A Ranganayaki a doctorate holder in Vaishnavism describes the birth of Krishna as narrated in the Vishnupurana

The fifth Amsa of Sri Vishnu purana or the Purana Ratna as it has been described by Sri Yamunacarya in his Stotra Ratna, is devoted entirely to the Krishnavatara. Lord Narayana took this Avatara in response to the pleas of Mother Earth, supported by the devas, to alleviate her burden and her distress. This account is very much like what is found in the Srimad Bhagvata Purana of Sage Vyasa. Probably Sage Parasara’s account of the Krishna-story was the source for his son’s work.

The Backdrop

Sage Parasara’s narration of the Krishnavatara of Bhagavan Narayana on Earth, begins in response to his disciple Maitreya’s desire to hear about the exploits (in detail) of the Lord born in the clan of the Yadus.
