Bhadrachalam is a famous Hindu temple of Vaishnavite culture situated on the banks of the river Godavari popularly referred to as the southern Ganges. This town is located in Khammam district which falls in Telangana region at a distance of 320 km northeast of Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Bhadrachalam has derived its name from the Bhadragiri (the mountain of Bhadra). The town is about 120 km from the district headquarters Khammam. |

The very name Bhadrachalam reminds us the Lord Rama, the sage Bhadra, the devotee Ramdas (Kancharla Gopanna) and the Nawab Tanisha. The sage Bhadra, son of Meru and Menaka, transformed himself as the mountain and prayed to Lord Rama to stay on his rocks along with Sita and Lakshmana. Needless to say that Hanuman is a part of Rama. Bhadrachalam is closely connected with the life of the saint-composer Ramdas, who was known earlier as Kancharla Gopanna. He was the Tehasildar of Bhadrachalam during 1630s. It is said that he had utilized money from the government exchequer to construct the gracious temple for Lord Rama with rich architectural dexterity. Due to this, Gopanna was imprisoned in a dungeon at the Golkonda Fort in Hyderabad. This dungeon is seen even today. |
