|
Of the various Puranas in existence, 18 puranas are considered to be more sacred as Vyasokta Puranas or Puranas composed by the venerable sage Veda Vyasa. They are the Matsya, markandeya, Bhagavata, Bhavishya, Brahma, Brahmanda, Brahmakaivastha, Vamana, Vayu, Vishnu, Varaha, Agni, Narada, Padma, Linga, Garuda, Kurma and Skanda Puranas. The stalamahatmyam of the temple of the Lord of Tirumalai, also called the Sri Venkatachala Mahatyam, is mentioned in several Puranas such as Sri Varaha, Padma, Garuda, Brahma, Markandeya, Vamana, Brahmottara, Kanda, Aditya and Bavishyottara Puranas. Of these the more important Puranas giving legends of the Lord of Tirumalai are the Varaha Puranam and Bhjavishyottara Puranam. It shall be our endeavor in this chapter to make a brief study of the legends mentioned in the various Puranas. |
|
Part A of this Chapter deals with the legends from Varaha Puranam; Part B gives the legends from the Bhavishyottara Puranam, while Part C gives important legends from other Puranams. |
