Translated into Japanese as Mount Reishu, "The Mountain of the Spiritual Eagle," Sanskrit Gridhra-krita. So called because Mara, the Evil One, according to Buddhist tradition, once assumed the form of a vulture on it to interrupt the meditation of Ananda, the disciple of Buddha. It is also called "the Hill of the Vulture Cavern", because Buddha, by his supernatural power, made a cleft in the rock, introduced his hand, and stroked Ananda’s shoulder, so that his fear of the evil bird passed away. Some say that the name is merely due to the fact that vultures abound on the mountain. |
