The Universe, God and God-Realization
THE UNIVERSE, GOD AND GOD-REALIZATION: From the View Point of Vedanta. By Swami Satprakashananda. Published by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, Chennai 600 004. First Indian Edition, 2004, Paperback, pp. 310, Rs.75.

This book, as the name indicates, is an exposition of the philosophy of Vedanta, with a particular reference to the advaitic school of thought. In this book, the author has brought out in great detail the Vedantic point of view of God, the concept of the ‘Ultimate Reality’ and the ‘cosmos’, the process of creation as propounded by Vedanta, and the different avenues open to the seekers for realization of God or the Ultimate Reality. In Vedanta, one of the difficult postulates is Maya, a concept which is difficult to correctly grasp. The author has in this book taken great care to explain this difficult concept to the readers in simple English.

The book opens with a general introduction to the importance of religion in modern times and for the forthcoming generations. The contents of the book are laid out in four parts, each having four chapters. The first part opens with an introduction to Vedanta in the first chapter and its universal significance is expounded in the three subsequent chapters. In part two, the concept of universe or the cosmos, its origin and its nature as visualized in Vedanta are clearly brought out in four chapters. The reader is presented a picture of the efficient and material cause of world, their empirical reality, the concept of God or Iswara and Maya, the two viewpoints in the process of creation, namely the ‘spontaneous’ and from the ‘word’.
