The Young Man’s Boon - Parables of Sivananda

There was once a young man who lived in a village nearby a temple. He used to love God only for Prasad and for ringing the bells. His love for the Divine was innocent and unknowing. He used to think of the carved and installed stone as God. He used to revere as such and pray: "O God! Grant me whatever I want and whenever I want. I shall feel ever happy and eternally beholden to Thee for ever." He knew no other prayer except this.

One day the Lord much pleased with his guileless and open-hearted devotion appeared in his dream and asked: "Do you want to enjoy your will and wishes up to the time of pensionable age when afterwards there will be none to help you or a care free, happy mendicant’s life with just a day’s morsel every day and enough clothing and shelter?"

Due to the natural delusion of youth, he said: "My Lord! I prefer the former." The Lord granted it. The joy of the man knew no bounds. He thought he would be happy by getting all he needed at the required moments. Poor fellow! Once he prayed "O Lord! Grant me good education without any impediments." It was readily granted.
