May Garuda, the best mount of Vishnu, the abode of six perfections, protector of many a virtuous person, and who causes confusion to the demon-forces, save us from sins accumulated in the three periods of time (past, present and future)! In his wings lie the three Vedas and by knowing his virtues, one can cross the ocean of triguna-s (prakriti characterized by sattva, rajas and tamas). Those who seek the first three human ends will have an easy passage (attainment) like the Lord Himself, with the help of Garuda.

Second Week

Lives Within Your Heart?

With stones both large and small
Is built the mosque,
To the tower of which the mullah climbs,
And cries till he is hoarse,
As though the Lord were deaf.
Why does the mullah shout?
Know ye not, O mullah,
That the Invisible is not hard of hearing,
And He whom you invoke so loudly
Lives within your heart?
To the mosque goes the Turk,
To the temple goes the Hindu,
Rushing about in their own ways;
But within the body is the invisible Lord:
Him they do not see.

We build the house of the Lord of brick and stone, and standing high on top of its tower the priest calls aloud for Him. Quite evidently, this must be a deaf God who does not hear our call. Kabir Sahib tells the priest that the Lord is not hard of hearing and that he need not make such a great outcry. The Lord for whom you shout so loudly lives within you, says Kabir. Muslims search for Him in mosques, and Hindus in temples, while Sikhs and Christians look for Him in their gurdwaras and churches. Yet He eludes them all. Unless they enter the sanctum sanctorum of their own shrine, the human body, they cannot find the indescribable One, for He lives within and can only be found there.
