Meher Baba - The Silent Master

Dr. G Ramesh Babu

Meher means compassionate. Baba means the father. Therefore, Meher Baba means the compassio-nate father. The Indian fakir Sai Baba of Shiridi hailed Meher Baba (1894-1969) as the “Parvardigar” (God as the Almighty Sustainer) Himself during 1915. Whereas, the spiritual master Upasini Maharaj stated that Meher Baba was the “Ancient one” in 1921 itself. On February 10, 1954, Baba declared that he was the incarnation of God i.e., an avatar.

Merwan Sheriar Irani was the original name of Meher Baba. He was born on 25th February, 1894 in Pune as a second son of his father Sheriar Mundegar Irani a Persian Zoroastrian. His mother was Shireen who called him as the “most beautiful child”. This child of a wandering Sufi dervish had evolved as a messiah to millions of people globe-wide. The basic concepts of Sufism, Vedantic philosophy and Mysticism could be attributed to the school of Meher Baba. He was very much interested in religion, metaphysics, aesthetics and ethics. The influence of Muslim holy woman Hazarat Babajan was profound on Meher Baba. She was his first perfect master. The rest of the four masters were Tajuddin Baba of Nagpur, Narayan Maharaj of Kedgoan, Sai Baba of Shiridi and Upasani Maharaj of Sakori.
