Satrughna |
King Dasaratha, after performing the putrakameshti yaga, was blessed with four sons––Rama was born to Kausalya, Lakshmana and Satrughna to Sumitra and Bharata to Kaikeyi. Satrughna means one who destroys enemies. When Rama married Sita, Satrughna married her cousin, Srutakirti. When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana went to the forest, Satrughna stayed with Bharata in Ayodhya. He was also doing puja to Sri Rama’s paduka along with Bharata. Like Bharata, he was also devoted to Rama and Lakshmana. |
Savitri |
Daughter of king Asvapati, Savitri fell in love with Satyavan, who was destined for an early death. Despite a warning to this effect by a sage, she married Satyavan and lived happily. When Satyavan’s end approached, and the God of death, Yama, came to take his life, Savitri argued with him convincingly and made Yama agree to give back Satyavan’s life. Since Savitri was a staunch worshipper of Mangalagauri, the Goddess of auspiciousness, she was able to save her husband’s life. |
