Thyagaraja A Great Musician Saint Rs.195 (2003 edition) By M S Ramaswami Aiyar

Sangeethamapi Saahityam Saraswatyaha Sthana dvayam

Ekam Aapaatha Madhuram Anyamaalochanaamrutham.

Music and Literature are described as the two breasts of Sri Saraswathi Maatha!

The milk of the right breast is sweet throughout while that of the left gives enjoyment on unearthing the meaning through interpretation. It is said that the babies who drink milk from the Goddess Mother’s right breast would become good singers/musicians, while those drinking from the left would become good poets. Saint Thyagaraja drank the milk from both the breasts and could become the greatest musician and a Vaaggeyakara or lyricist. It is scintillating to know about his life through the book THYAGARAJA – A Great Musician Saint, by Mr. M.S. Ramaswami Aiyar.

Mr. M.S. Ramaswami Aiyar, a musician and lyricist in Carnatik Music, describes the life of Saint Thyagaraja with devotion and adoration expressed in each and every line of this book.

The main aim of writing this book in the words of the author is to show how the dharmic life of Thyagaraja served to emphasis a moral or adorn a tale; to sketch the various phases of his musical progress and point out how they were connected with the development of his religious and ethical notions; to inquire into the state of music prior to his time and find out whether and if so how he improved. Prior to publishing the book in 1927, he interviewed persons who had met Saint Thyagaraja. Some of the excerpts of such conversations appear in the book.......

When you read this book, you not only get a holistic picture of Thyagaraja’s life, but also get a fair knowledge of the science of Music itself. All music lovers in general and music learners in particular should read this book.
