Bones - Their Fragility and Strength - Snehal Bapat |
First let us briefly understand the chemical composition of the bones. |
| Seventy percent of adult bones are made up of inorganic material i.e., minerals such as Calcium and Phosphate. These minerals give bones their hardness and rigidity like a piece of stick. But the minerals by themselves would make the bone very brittle just like a chalk. To avoid that, the remaining thirty percent of bone is made up of organic material (carbon based) like Collagen. Young plant stems are made up of similar collagen fibres. | |||
| This organic material gives the bones a certain amount of flexibility and resiliency so that when we do high impact activities like jumping or running, the bones do not break. | |||
