Bones - Their Fragility and Strength -  Snehal Bapat

First let us briefly understand the chemical composition of the bones.

Seventy percent of adult bones are made up of inorganic material i.e., minerals such as Calcium and Phosphate.  These  minerals give bones their hardness and rigidity like a piece of stick. But the minerals by themselves would make the bone very brittle just like a chalk.  To avoid that, the remaining thirty percent of bone is made up of organic material (carbon based) like Collagen.  Young plant stems are made up of similar collagen fibres.

This organic material gives the bones a certain amount of flexibility and resiliency so that when we do high impact activities like jumping or running, the bones do not break.
