Self-Discovery and Education - Mary Anderson

The words ‘discovery’ and ‘education’ imply something similar. To ‘discover’ means to ‘uncover’ –– to reveal something hidden. And to ‘educate’ means to draw out something from within.

Obvious examples of discovery are the so-called ‘voyages of discovery’ in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and the exploration of hitherto unknown territory in general. However, what interests modern man most are journeys into space –– to the moon or some planet.

But it is the inner sensation of discovery which concerns us here. Do you remember when you first heard a Beethoven symphony – or read a masterpiece? Keats on reading Homer felt like astronomers making discoveries:
