Voluntary Reflection |

|
The first step in deliberate self-training is the practice of voluntary reflection. People usually do not reflect much upon what they have seen and heard, however much they may have been excited and interested at the time of the experience. Even when they do reflect it is scarcely voluntary, but is due to pressure upon the personality from without or to physiological excitement set up within the body. |

|
The habit of voluntary reflection is distinguished from involuntary reflection by the fact that it is deliberate. You lean back, as it were, in your chair, and look over the matter of the book that you may have read, the incident that you have experienced, not with a deliberate intention to study it, but just to look it over several times. For want of this habit the rich variety of our modern life leaves little or no knowledge behind it in the mind, and fails to awaken thought. |
