How to Have Peace of Mind - Swami Shivapremananda

The search for peace of mind has been a predominant factor in any civilized society. When we have it, we can think clearly, make better decisions, and generally feel well. But there is no magic key to unlock it. It is good to doubt all quick-fix solutions.

The primitive mind was satisfied when its physical needs were met, the appetite for pleasure gratified. The experience was, of course, superficial, and like any experience, temporary. Then there is another kind of peace, also shallow, through indifference and resignation, the peace of the lazy. In some cultures, the acceptance of fate conduces to peace, but it makes one a fatalist. Such societies remain stagnant and backward.

It is, however, a common experience that the satisfaction of sense cravings does not lead to emotional fulfillment, such as through love. The result in that case is a different kind of peace, with a greater depth, and a longer-lasting effect. It has two aspects. In deep meditation on one’s identity with a sacred presence within, call it God, or the infinite spirit as the source of truth and love, a deep inner peace is experienced. But it does not soak in well without the help of the second aspect.

The second part is the result of an effort. A duty well carried out, an action performed as best as one could, a responsibility well fulfilled, a relationship profoundly deepened through understanding and loving care. It is a consequence of trying to realize a spiritual goal, such as to be less selfish and more transparent. It is in the realization that unselfishness and honesty help us to be fair to others. It is in the cleansing of the desire for revenge by forgiveness. This peace is even more deeply felt in a pure heart.
