The Ultimate Exchange Offer - Parvathy Raman

Once we learn to discriminate between atma and anatma,  and get even an inkling of the glory and fathomless beauty of the Supreme, we will be ready to relinquish everything in order to gain the Absolute.

My husband was glancing through the newspaper, early in the morning, with a hot, steaming cup of coffee in his hands.  Suddenly he gave an exclamation and looked  up contemplatively at our three-year old television set.  I knew what was coming. An exchange offer! After finishing the housework, I opened the Vivekachoodamani text to prepare for the next class.  We were on verse 308.  The phrase samtyakta raagah paramaartha laabhaat stood out suddenly - an exchange offer!  Sankara is telling me to give up attachments in order to gain the Supreme Reality, Supreme Bliss.  It made sense. So this is what vairaagya meant, to give up the lower in order to gain the higher.  Such a concept of vairaagya can have no pain in it, no sense of loss. no bitterness.
